The town of Thanjavur(also known as Tanjore) inaugurated the tradition of Thanjavur, or Tanjore painting, a classical South Indian style of painting. It evolved between the 17th and 19th centuries, during the reign of the Maratha rulers.
Tanjore paintings are characterized by vivid, flat colours, plain compositions, gleaming golden foil work and the use of glass beads and occasionally precious and semi-precious gems.
